about the layout
This layout features the most beautiful woman to have ever graced the face of this planet, Marlene Dietrich, in one of her outfits for Josef von Sternberg's Shanghai Express. I absolutely love the outfit she designed with Travis Banton and had to make a layout featuring it. Although it's not "street fashion" per se, Dietrich knew how she wanted to present herself and had an impeccable way of dressing.
Image credit goes to the amazing Dr. Macro's High Quality Movie Scans, brushes made by Hybrid Genesis were used, Polardroid was used to make the Polaroids, and the blogging script is Wordpress.

Snap of the day – La Primavera  ·  Posted by Stephany

Dress: Angelic Pretty
Necklace: Forever 21
Tights Forever 21
Heels: Baby, the Stars Shine Bright

Headband: Forever 21
Clip: 6%dokidoki

Comments: I finally got to wear my Jewelry Gelée dress!!! My “I am going to choke myself with this pearl necklace” pose came from not knowing how to pose. I need to feel more confident in front of the camera and also know how to make myself look decent.
The title is going in the vein of my previous outfit post’s title since the dress is bright like spring! I am also listening to The Four Seasons again and no matter how many times I listen to Spring: First movement, it is always amazing. I continuously hear and notice things I have not noticed in the past in The Four Seasons — ah, what an amazing series.
Off with the music tangent and on to my outfit. It was meant to be a very casual outfit for class, which sort of ended up being a bad idea because my dress and petticoats were so fluffy that I had to stuff myself into my seat (my professor told me it was like watching someone stuff a marshmallow into a tiny hole) and it was an odd juxtaposition of me wearing this candy coloured dress while discussing German Romanticism and the importance and meaning of an artist. Well, discussing about deep, dark Germans gets exhausting so a little colour won’t hurt anyone! My tights are a lighter colour than in the picture and they glitter like my dress! Next time I am going to take detail pictures of this dress because it’s just so amazing with the details.
An amusing story about my shoes: They took me over 40 minutes to buckle them while contorting my body into odd poses to even do so.

Theme posts!  ·  Posted by Stephany

For the month of March, Smultronstället members might post pictures of themselves when they are feeling plain lazy and do not feel like dressing up a little. Although there are some members who always look stunning every day and wear fabulous outfits, I also know that I, myself, can look like I rolled out of bed and still go to classes while looking like a mess. After all, I am only human and quite a lazy one at that.

Kudos to those who take the time to dress up every day!

Look forward to the theme posts!

Snap of the day – L’inverno  ·  Posted by Stephany

Beret: Dorfman Pacific Co.
Coat: Forever 21
Scarf: Jones New York
Dress: Moi-même-Moitié
Tights DKNY
Boots: Bearpaw
Bag: From the gift shop part of a Mozart exhibit (Close up)

Comments: A very casual outfit that I wore to meet my friend at a café. I finally had the fresh mozzarella sandwich that I have been craving so I am a very content lady. The bag was a present my mom bought for me when we went to the Mozart exhibit in Seoul, Korea when they had various items from Mozarts Geburtshaus and other Mozart related items as part of the exhibit and had a gift shop as part of the exhibit. I don’t know if there is a gift shop in the actual Mozarts Geburtshaus, but I know that they sell this bag in Salzburg since a musician told me they bought the same bag in Salzburg, except I didn’t ask if she bought it as some Mozart related store. How I got my Iron Gate dress is very special and touching and I really love it for that. It’s a shame that the print or lace details aren’t very clear in the picture; I wish I had a camera with higher megapixels because maybe then the details might come out clearer. Ah well, my good old camera still works well and serves its purpose!
Title was named after listening to Joshua Bell’s version of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons (although the title simply means winter in Italian) and because it is still winter in Massachusetts. I also adore Bell’s version of Winter’s first movement although I know Aktena would say otherwise and say Nigel Kennedy’s version is much superior!

Flashback – Lolita in Wonderland  ·  Posted by Dodo

Shirt: Hell Cat Punks
Leopard JSK: Bodyline
Corset: Burleska
Silver skirt: Handmade by Eliiza
Pink bow: Paris Kids
Boots: Dr Martens

Silver bow: Handmade by me
Pink necklace: Claire’s
Upper lashes: Claire’s
Lower lashes: B Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful
Silver eyeliner: Urban Decay

Comments: Yesterday was the Lolita in Wonderland event organised by the wonderful Alex and I got to see all my frilly breadbins! First time I was wearing lolita in a while so I really wanted to dress up and do something different and this silver skirt is pretty much the only reason that makes me want to wear lolita haha. I tried to pin up the skirt with the pink bow so you could see the leopard jsk underneath to try something new as the main reason I got sick of lolita was most people look boring and the same haha. I hope this outfit looked okay, but I gained a bit of weight so I didn’t look as good as I hoped lol. But this outfit pretty sums up all the types of colours and things I love – silver, polkadots, leopard and pink. Also gave me a chance to wear my lovely silver lashes! Although my fringe got a bit in the way lol.

The actual event was really good and it was wonderful seeing everyone, including Aiko, who was amazing modelling! *creepy* I’ll hopefully be posting up a few snapshots of other people because UK lolitas are amaaazing~ <333

Snap of the day – The Heretics  ·  Posted by Stephany

Veil headband: Forever 21
Dress: Moi-même-Moitié
Jacket: Forever 21
Tights Urban Outfitters
Shoes: H&M
Bag: Jean Paul Gaultier

Black eyeliner: Hot Topic
White eyeliner: M · A · C
Lipstick: M · A · C – Slimshine: Urgent!
Blush: Estée Lauder – Bronze Goddess

Comments: The weather was pretty decent (meaning no snow and rain) so I took this opportunity to dress up. I wore this to a screening of The Heretics and Q&A with the director, Joan Braderman, and the film really was phenomenal! I highly recommend everyone to watch it if you are interested in women’s rights movement in America and Heresies magazines. As for my outfit, this is just one of those outfits where I combined aspects of things I like, although I didn’t do that when I wore the outfit. I just wore what I thought would look good together, but looking back at my outfit now, I can see how styles I like have influenced the outfit. The leopard print jacket is inspired by the 60s, the veil is a nod towards my love for vintage fashion, the bow reflects my fondness for cute things and ribbons/bows, the dress is representing my admiration of Gothic fashion (I am sure that someone will be able to incorporate this dress into a beautiful Gothic outfit), and my boots are just casual wear. I also really like combining items from high fashion brands but also from brands that most people have access to, which I did with this outfit. I don’t know if you can tell, but there are little pom-pom-like puffs on the veil and I do have the veil down in the full outfit shot.
I bought the bag because I fell in love with it when I saw my Poupée Girl friend, norico, owning a bag with this pattern. I fell in love with it when I saw a picture of it and wanted it so badly. I was really lucky to have come across it since the chances of me finding it were probably slim since it was only released in Japan. It has teddy bears, portraits of women, men, and children that look like they were from the late 1800s-early 1900s, and dolls.

Street snap – Mia  ·  Posted by Aktena

Name: Mia
Age: 19
Occupation: Law/Economics student

Leather panel leggings: Stella
Handbag: vintage
Jacket: Witchery
Silk shirt: vintage

Comments: This is what my classiest friend, Mia, wore to one of our frequest dumplings/shopping/chocolate dates. She has absolutely the best eye for vintage items, & mixes rich, luxirious materials (leather, silk) like no one else can. It’s a pity the lighting was so poor, but the leggings have panels of black leather running amongst the regular material, so awesome.

They were sparkly. …and I swear my skin isn’t actually orange! This photo. It just turned out funny. ;___; I’m actually very pale.

Dress: Angelic Pretty
Socks: Angelic Pretty

Blue eyeliner: Urban Decay
Black eyeliner: Hot Topic
White eyeliner: M · A · C

Blush: Estée Lauder

Comments: Finally I wore the “MOST UNORIGINAL OUTFIT EVER”!!! Not only are the main pieces from the same brand but they’re from the same series! How ridiculous is this outfit? I don’t even take it seriously because the only thing that took much effort was makeup and teasing my hair — I honestly thought my arm was going to pop off from teasing so much of my hair. The close-up shot of me adds more to the absurdity of me wearing this outfit because I am pretty much never on my phone and the best close-up shot was of the one of me with my phone while calling my friend. I am still amused that I own a set from the same series (the set was cheaper than just buying the dress alone so how could I resist the awesome deal?) since it goes against all my thoughts about dressing up. Although I am all for matchy-matchy outfits since I am really unoriginal, I still try to mix it up a bit by wearing different brands. Ah this outfit is just too ridiculous and because it is just so silly, I love it in its absurdity. I decided to wear this dress today since I am going petticoat shopping in a few minutes and wanted to test the various petticoats with this dress. Also, I am still on the look out for blue shoes since the ones I wanted are now sold out.
Sort of off-topic but my face expression in the outfit shot was inspired by Gustav Klimt’s Judith I.
